A new retail strip mall, a Texas Roadhouse restaurant and a self-storage facility will be opening in Wilkins.

The former Sears store along Business Route 22 is being renovated to house a strip mall and a CubeSmart storage facility, which is expected to open in December, according to Barry J. Layton, on-site manager for the developer, M&J Wilkow.

In the Shops at Penn Center East at the site, the old Brewstone restaurant has been torn down to make way for a Texas Roadhouse, which also is expected to open in December.

No other tenants have been announced for the retail spaces.

Work on the retail portion of the strip mall is scheduled to be done in January, but businesses are not expected to occupy the spaces until late spring or early summer 2018, Mr. Layton said.

"We've actually torn part of the Sears building off in the front, and we're putting a new facade across the front containing retail storefronts," he said.

"It's going to have smaller retailers, a multi-tenant kind of strip shopping center from Route 22," Mr. Layton said. He said about 35,000 square feet of retail space will be at the front of the building, which he defined as the side that faces Business Route 22.

In addition, the Starbucks that is in the Shops at Penn Center East will move to a spot between the new Texas Roadhouse and the plaza. The new Starbucks will have a drive-thru, which the current one does not have, and is expected to open in the spring, Mr. Layton said.

He added that an office building at Penn Center East-Building 6 has been sold and is expected to be developed into a hotel.
