M & J Wilkow is seeking a Lease Accountant to work in our Corporate Office in Chicago, IL. The role will assist the Director of Lease Accounting in the adherence to process and procedures surrounding all lease accounting services both through their own role directly, as well as, coordinating and working closely with the Accounting, Property Management and Asset Management personnel.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

  • Assist in the full scope of Lease Accounting services including:
  • Abstracting and interpreting commercial lease documents (leases, amendments, subleases)
  • Validation and management of data entry of lease documents and subsequent reporting
  • Preparation and reviewing of periodic and annual landlord reconciliation statements and real estate tax calculations to ensure accuracy and lease compliance
  • Tracking and maintaining critical dates
  • Tenant sales compilation and review of overage/percentage rent calculations
  • Assist with processes and procedures relating to the full scope of Lease Accounting, including:
  • Landlord reconciliations with an emphasis on standardization
  • Setup of retail property reconciliations for acquired properties
  • Day-to-day processing, monitoring and review of lease activity
  • Assist Director of Leasing Accounting with inquiries from property management regarding tenant lease compliance
  • Assist Director of Lease Accounting with tenant inquiries regarding landlord reconciliations and working with team for timely and appropriate responses.
  • Assist/coordinate with Director of Lease Accounting during due diligence of leasing areas (abstraction, testing, reconciliation review) on onboarding of properties


  • Strong financial and analytical skills; ability to understand and interpret data
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience and capability to master company-specific accounting and database software/programs (MRI/Yardi)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; desire to work within a diverse, collaborative, and driven professional environment
  • Ability to work independently and within a team to build relationships and interact effectively with business partners
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage workload, and meet deadlines consistently; exceptional attention to detail and highly organized
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance and at least 3 years of work experience in commercial real estate/retail experience, lease administration, or property management
  • Expertise in understanding and interpreting complex commercial lease language
